For example you may have to allow the company who gave you the free item to advertise on your site or have a link on your site. So be sure to read the small print. This does not apply to the free software that I wrote about at the beginning of this article.

When you make your own website up you will need to purchase a domain name, think carefully about the name you choose. It is a good idea to choose a name that has relevance to the theme of your website, especially if you intent to earn money from your website.

Also when choosing your domain name I would recommend using a dot com name, unless you only have a target market such as your home country.

It’s free, of course, and very easy, but doing it properly does take some time and effort.

I recommend a couple of ways to find websites which might be willing to link to you.

One way is to do a simple search to find websites with information about the same subject as your site, or closely related information. If you have a website about flowers, for instance, you can use search terms such as “gardens”, “gardening”, “flowers”, “plants”, and “seedlings” to find sites which may be interested in linking to yours.

Or, you can take another route. Just identify a related site which is already highly popular, and find the websites which link to it. You can do that with a search in Google or http://alltheweb.com for “link:” (without the quotation marks) and the complete URL of the website. For example, link:
http://www.college-scholarships.com (and don’t forget the colon after the word “link”).

Once you’ve identified the websites most likely to link to yours, visit them, obtain the email addresses of their webmasters, and send an email requesting a link. To be effective, your email must:

1. be brief, well written, and polite. Always use “please” and “thank you”.

2. describe your site in no more than 25-30 words. The description of your site must be interesting and explain why the webmaster’s visitors will find it helpful or enjoyable. The less hype the better.

3. offer the webmaster something in return. For example:

a. a link on your site.

b. information about how to submit their website to 300,000+ search engines, directories, and links pages for free. When they agree to link to you, send them to: http://www.college-scholarships.com/free_search_engine_submission.htm.

Contact an average of at least ten webmasters a day, more if you have the time. With just a ten percent success rate, that will net you a minimum of thirty new links a month.

If you follow this advice, you should experience an almost immediate, albeit modest, increase in visitors to your website. However, the biggest benefit of a good linking campaign, higher search engine rankings, will take a bit longer. There is no magic formula, and there are lots of variables, but your search engine ranking could improve in as little as a few weeks, and should continue to improve as time goes on and more sites link to you as both a direct result of your efforts and webmasters seeing your links on other sites.

Keep at it and, all things being equal, you can obtain the kind of search engine rankings that can transform your website from a hobby (as my wife originally referred to my first site) to a site which can pay your children’s full college costs and more, as that same site now does for us.

How does that algorithm work, and what the heck is it! The bottom line question is always asking what does my site need to change in order for my site to rise into the top listings on the first page of results.

Well, an algorithm is a very complicated mathematical equation, that provides a scoring system for the engines to rank sites. No one really knows exactly how Google goes through their ranking system, or what the algorithm actually is, but there are some basics to it all. I think of their ranking as have two functions, one is to look at the page itself, the code and content, and rank that according to a set of standards they developed. Second is their PageRank system, which looks at and analyzes the inbound links to your site. This is a very unique, and successful, method to determine which web page deserves to be listed at the top of the listings.

Larry Page, founder of Google, developed an algorithm while in college at Stanford University which is known as PageRank. This algorithm scores or values links pointing at your site from elsewhere on the web and all the on-site elements as well. The overall process assigns a score to your site that is relevant to the overall popularity of your site, as a whole, and in comparison to other sites.

The basic pages of your site are ranking in the same fashion that inbound links have a scoring system. Google claims they look at 100 items in your site to provide your site with a score. Marketing the Website

Submitting to search engines is only the first step toward a strong Internet Marketing campaign – it should never be the full focus. There are several ways to market a website.

One advantage of a blog is that it is submitted to the blog directories every time someone writes a new post. Web sites that are submitted more than 4 or 5 times a year may find themselves banned. However, a blog can ping the search engine several times a day without risk of being banned.

In turn, the blog search engines ‘ping’ the big search engines who give the ‘new’ content high page rank for the first few hours.

Marketing The Podcast

No podcast on your ecommerce website? Why? Submitting it to the podcast directories is another way to generate free exposure. The podcast only needs a few streaming or downloaded files to qualify. Podcasts can also be listed on dozens and dozens of free services, each building links to the main site, as well as increasing the exposure to the website. Promote Video

The list continues. Submit your newsletter, forums, and chat directories. A single article can be submitted to more than 50 000 article submission ‘free content’ sites. No cost involved, except time, and the exposure will create a ripple effect sending your message farther across the web than a $100 000 SEO, traffic buying, and search engine submission campaign.
